In 1965, a covert US-CIA and Indian mission to install a plutonium-powered spy device on Nanda Devi failed due to severe weather. The device, including plutonium capsules, was lost on the mountain, raising significant environmental and security concerns. This incident led to the mountain's closure to general mountaineering, officially banned in 1983.
